French Press Instructions: Full body, easy brewing fun at home
Why French Press is perfect for beginners
The French press is one of the simplest brewing methods around: coarse grind, hot water, wait, press down – done. Ideal for anyone who likes full-bodied coffee and wants to brew several cups at once.
In this French Press Guide, I will show you a simple, reproducible recipe.
French Press basic recipe (for approx. 500 ml)
-
Coffee: 30 g
-
Water: 500 g (ml)
-
Grind size: coarse (comparable to coarse sea salt)
-
Brewing time: 4–5 minutes
Step-by-step French press instructions
-
Preheat French press
Rinse the pot with hot water so that it doesn't absorb too much heat. -
Coarsely grind coffee
Grind 30g of coffee coarsely . A grind that is too fine will quickly make the coffee bitter and muddy. -
Pour in coffee and add water
Place ground coffee in the French press and pour over 500 ml of hot water (approx. 92–96 °C).
Stir briefly with a spoon to ensure the coffee is completely coated. -
To let go
Place the lid on top (leave the stamp on top) and let it steep for 4 minutes . -
Break up and skim off any foam (optional, for a clearer taste)
After 4 minutes, gently stir the crust on top with a spoon – this will release aromas.
Use a spoon to remove the foam if you want a cleaner coffee. -
Slowly press down the stamp.
Press the plunger down slowly and evenly. Do not press too hard, so that no fine coffee grounds are forced through the filter. -
Serve immediately or transfer to a serving dish
Serve the coffee immediately or transfer it to another pot to prevent further extraction and bitterness.
How to adjust the taste
-
More body, more intensity
→ a little more coffee (e.g. 32 g per 500 ml) -
Gentler, less intense
→ slightly less coffee (e.g. 26–28 g per 500 ml) -
The coffee is too bitter.
→ grind coarser
→ slightly shorter brewing time (e.g. 3:30–4 minutes) -
The coffee is too weak/sour.
→ grind a little finer
→ Extend brewing time to 4:30–5 minutes
Tip for less "sludge" in your cup
Don't pour the last 10-15% of the brew from the pot into your cups. That's where most of the fine sediment collects. This will make your French press coffee much clearer.
Conclusion
With a French press, you can quickly and easily prepare aromatic, full-bodied coffee – perfect for a leisurely morning or brunch with friends. Using fresh beans and the right grind will get the most out of your specialty coffee.
